Frequently asked questions:

What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat is a nonprofit, Christian housing ministry.  We believe that every person should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. We welcome all people to work with us in partnership.

What does Habitat for Humanity do?

We build, renovate and repair houses all over the world using volunteer labor and donations.  We advocate to increase access to decent, affordable housing around the world.

Does Habitat give houses away?

No, Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. Habitat’s partner families buy the houses that Habitat builds and renovates.
Habitat makes no profit on the sale.  In the United States, Habitat homeowners purchase their houses through affordable monthly mortgage payments.

Is my contribution tax deductable?

Yes,  MAHFH is an officially recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization so we meet the legal requirements for your donations to be deductible. However, you should consult your tax advisor for personal tax advice.

What kind of things can I donate besides money?

We can accept most new building materials, and we can accept a wide variety of new and used items that are sold through the Mauston ReStore that helps provide funding for us.  Used items must be presentable and in good working order.  You can also donate a part of a build project. For example, you might donate the kitchen cabinets, so you'd pay for the kitchen cabinets and/or install them. Or, you might donate a lot and/or prepare the land for the build.

How many hours would I have to work if I volunteer?

We don't have any minimum requirements. We're grateful for however much time you're willing to donate.

I don't know anything about building houses.   Is there still something I can do to help?

Absolutely! In fact, helping build a Habitat house is a great way to gain new knowledge and skills. And there are other ways to help our cause.  Helping fund raise, plan and organize events, contribute technical knowledge in areas such as web management, writing news letters and news releases are just a few.

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

The minimum age to work on a MAHFH site is 16 years, however, you must be 18 to use any power tools. For volunteers under 18, we require written consent from a parent or guardian.
